Like Scott's Escape, the novel starts off setting up a lawless distopian society where the government is too weak to effectively control the darker sides of human nature. Life is cheap and organized crime has a free hand. A poignant critique of libertarian style hands-off government in my humble opinion. Even with humanity having being nearly wiped from the galaxy, humans are still unable to unite in common purpose and instead waste their precious few resources jockeying for power. The protagonist is soon drawn unwillingly into the middle of this power struggle and a grave moral dilemma. The plot develops and twists along quickly in an enthralling read and the universe is developed well with enough tantalizing hints of the larger picture to think that there could be a fascinating sci-fi series develop out of it. It's the best Scott novel yet, and I really hope the author follows up with a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Science-fiction novel April 22, 2013

This novel had me from page one and wouldn't let me go until I had read the words "the end". I loved everything about Dark Space. Even though the story takes place in a setting that's foreign to me, I could still picture the places and characters. The conflict was intense and so powerful I chewed my fingernails off.

This is my second Jasper Scott novel and it will not be my last. This young author will be huge one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Sci-Fi Adventure April 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Dark Escape is a wonderful science-fiction adventure filled with solid characters thrust into increasingly difficult situations, more twists than you can shake a stick at, and a dire fate that the protagonists are fighting with all their might to avoid. The author rapidly brings us into this new world, using sufficiently descriptive text to whisk us away with lush visuals, while not overloading the story. Indeed, the book moves along at a brisk pace, and is sufficiently compact to make it a quick and entertaining read.

There are plenty of nods to classic science-fiction, making the story feel at home with the likes of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. The author works in current scientific concepts and security issues that ensure that it is a timely and particularly pertinent yarn. It definitely left me wanting to see what more is in store for these characters.
